Abstract
The iCAN (intelligent car navigation systems) project is collaboration between academia (the University of Tokyo) and industry (the Toshiba and Yazaki corporations) to pursue intelligent systems and their enabling technologies for near-future intelligent transportation systems. The ITS scenario is complex, involving fundamental nontechnical (such as legal and institutional) issues. So, iCAN´s vision of a near future ITS incorporates both technical and nontechnical concerns. On the basis of this vision, we decided to focus on driver assistance systems and smart-community transportation systems.
