Abstract :
Radiation responses of several new OH-related defect centers in unswept, Na-swept, and H-swept natural quartz crystals of high and low-H concentrations were determined. The high-H and the low-H quartz crystals had nearly the same aluminum concentration. Irradiation was done using a Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator and the defect centers were monitored using near-infrared absorption at 77 K. Crystals were subjected to a sequence of low (77-K) and room-temperature (300-K) irradiations that separate proton and alkali ion motions. The results are discussed in terms of proton and alkali ion motion to shallow and deep traps and compared with those for cultured quartz
