Abstract
The capabilities of currently available hardware and software for supporting multimedia applications are examined. In particular, the Apple Macintosh, DOS/Windows, IBM Ultimedia/OS-2, Unix, and Philips/Microware are discussed. The inadequacies of present hardware are identified. Data compression, bandwidth, delivery bottleneck, LAN issues, and interoperability are discussed.<>
