Abstract
It is shown how areas of static magnetic field in ideal cases can be screened without external field disturbances by applying, in addition to the screening material, a suitable current distribution that is equal in size to the tangential component of the vacuum field on the surface of the screening material, is perpendicular to the tangential field component, and has a sign such that it reduces the field between the current and material. Such a current has been very successfully applied to nonideal cases, i.e. to materials with finite permeability and realistic current distributions. Its application also leads to better screening, possible reduction of the amount of screening material needed, and the possibility of screening higher fields
