Abstract :
The feasibility of applying perpendicular magnetic recording to a large-capacity image file system has been investigated experimentally. It is predicted that an areal density of 3.3 μm2/bit will be achieved for practical use at 100 kFRPI and 1950 TPI by introducing a sensitive single-pole perpendicular head with an Fe-Si/SiO2 multilayered main-pole film and a durable Co-Cr/Ni-Fe medium with high squareness. Guardbandless digital recording of still pictures was carried out using a flexible disk medium for which a durability over 10 million passes was ensured. It was confirmed that image data of 10 Mbytes can be recorded on one side of a 3.5-in. disk with bit error rate less than 1-10-5
