Abstract :
The excitation of the dominant HE11 mode by a transversely oriented electric dipole on the axis of an infinitely long dielectric rod is studied. The method of analysis involves expressing the fields and the source in a Fourier integral in the z direction and a Fourier series in the φ direction in a cylindrical coordinate system (ρ,φ,z). The practical significance of the present study, in particular regard to the excitation problem in dielectric surface waveguides, is emphasized.
