Abstract :
Early applications of computers in nuclear power plants reflected the valid concerns of the industry over the reliability of a relatively new technology. Process computers of that era were therefore assigned simple, routine tasks. Owners of nuclear power plants may now find it difficult to meet evolving regulatory criteria using these computers. Service and spare parts for older installations are difficult to obtain, compounding the problem. Replacing these systems has become cost effective in light of advancements in technology and the required response to recent regulations. A systematic, integrated approach to the design, procurement, and installation of new equipment can provide reliable operation and flexibility in meeting future requirements. This paper discusses a typical computer system, surveys current regulations, and describes an approach to meeting the criteria.
