Abstract :
This paper defines the electrical isolation device, its purpose, and its application both outside and inside the nuclear plant. Specific attention is given to isolation requirements and system fault conditions of concern in the nuclear plant. Magnetic, optical and other type isolators are discussed along with some characteristics of each, and a simple, but realistic isolator model is given to illustrate that these are not perfect devices. Finally, a single-channel field mountable analog isolator designed for nuclear plant service is described as well as its environmental qualification program.
