Abstract :
Research has been in progress now for over 40 years to develop machines that will recognise natural speech. The author discusses the problems of speech coding, recognition and synthesis. Research aimed at improving the analysis of the original speech and subsequent synthesis, and progress to date are discussed. The use of intelligent conversational dialogue and future developments are also discussed
