Abstract :
The advent of digital mobile-communication systems, notably CT2 (second-generation cordless technology) and pan-European cellular radio (Groupe Speciale Mobile, or GSM), heralds a transformation in the status of digital speech processing (DSP). This dramatic increase in the importance of DSP poses problems. As integration levels have risen, bringing the `system on a chip´ ever closer, access to comprehensive systems knowledge has become increasingly important for semiconductor companies. A common response to this problem is the strategic alliance, in which a semiconductor company and a systems company develop a systems-specific chip as a co-operative venture. The author looks at an example of such an alliance, covering the development of the CT2 speech transcoder function. In CT2, an adaptive-differential pulse-code modulation algorithm (ADPCM) is used. The author discusses the development of the ADPCM transcoder
