Abstract
The 40 year development of the plasma display panel from the first single pixel device, invented at the University of Illinois in 1964, to the 80-in diagonal high-definition television full color products found in the department stores today is presented using photos of the many displays developed during this period. The sources of the critical ideas and inventions used in today´s plasma TV products are examined in terms of the physical and electrical principles exploited.
