Abstract
Over the past 20 years, each new fleet of railway rolling stock purchased by the London Transport Executive has incorporated more and more electronic equipment. The paper outlines the rationale behind the adoption of this type of equipment and the experience gained with its use. Consideration is given to areas of apparent discord between electronic technology and the railway vehicle industry, together with an indication of how London Transport is dealing with the situation. It is intended that the paper provide the various aspects of the industry (manufacturers and users, technical staff and managers) with a better insight into the problems involved with the introduction of a `new technology¿ into a long established industry
