Abstract :
This paper examines the necessary conditions for a successful power conversion and transfer between one pair of electrodes of an MHD generator and a three-phase six-pulse line-commutated inverter. The electrodes are assumed to have a linear voltage/current characteristic. The inverter is supplied from an infinite AC busbar. The conditions are found to consist of three sets of constraints which: relate the electrical parameters of the generator and the inverter; limit the ranges of the inverter thyristor firing angle; and relate the magnitude of the inverter smoothing inductance and the time constant and loop gain of the inverter control circuit
