Abstract :
For the recognition of patterns as members of certain classes it is assumed that the probability distributions of certain characteristic features are known. For a decision based on the maximum likelihood criterion bounds on the statistical error are derived. In the case of normally distributed and statistically independent features these bounds are evaluated. Conditions are given under which the error tends to zero as the number of characteristic features goes to infinity.
