Determination of engine firing rate from the acoustic waveform

The firing of an engine gives rise to a periodicity in its emitted acoustic waveform. Attempts to measure the firing rate by applying autocorrelation analysis to the waveform have proved unsuccessful, but a modification of this method, originally used in speech analysis, has given encouraging preliminary results.
