Abstract :
The linear electro-optic effect (Pockels effect) has been used to measure DC electric fields of order 105 Vm¿¿1. Both lithium-niobate and bismuth-germanate crystals have been tried and their performances compared. A double-pass optical configuration was used, the ultimate aim being a single-ended probe capable of operation in a space-charge environment.
