Abstract
The demand for more and better images, within the constraints of existing storage and transmission technology, has prompted the development of a number of image compression standards. The author describes the development of such a standard which makes use of fractals rather than the traditional discrete cosine transform. Fractals have a natural affinity with computer graphics and are capable of generating images of limitless complexity and providing the basis for a very efficient compression algorithm
