Abstract :
The first assessment of a fast and relatively strong refractive optical nonlinearity in a MQW active waveguide operated at its material transparency current is presented. A large nonlinear figure of merit together with large phase shifts are demonstrated, indicating considerable promise for all-optical switching at speeds approaching 1 Tbit/s.
