Abstract :
Large losses occur at the transition between straight and curved rib waveguide segments. A bent optical rib waveguide is analyzed by the 3D imaginary-distance beam propagation method (BPM). The BPM is implemented with 3D finite differences. The transition losses are reduced with several techniques: (1) the offset between bent and straight guides, (2) trench location and sizes, (3) optimized slope of rib sidewall
