Abstract
The results of a 1989 survey conducted to assess the software-engineering capabilities of 13 prospective corporate members are discussed in a historical perspective. It is suggested that a look back at these predictions is clear evidence that the software industry grossly underestimated the effect of new hardware technology and grossly overestimated the affect of new software technology. Some advice on planning for the future of a software organization is offered.<>
