Abstract :
The potential effects of solar phenomena on communication systems used by the electric utility industry are addressed. Solar phenomena fundamentals and the interaction between solar emissions and the Earth´s ionosphere and magnetosphere are discussed. The resulting impact on communication systems, including radio, satellite, wireline, fiber optic, and powerline systems, is assessed. Mitigation techniques are outlined, and the authors call for observers to report suspected solar impact experiences
