Abstract :
The dielectric and accelerated aging tests on prototype ±500 kV DC oil-filled self-contained cables are described. The extensive test program was required to evaluate the high-voltage cables for the St. Lawrence River crossing of the ±500 kV Quebec-New England HVDC power transmission system. The main elements of the test program are outlined. A description is given of the required insulation levels, the characteristics of the cables supplied by three different manufacturers, as well as the cables´ installation for the type tests and accelerated aging tests. Details of the test program and procedures followed to carry out the tests are given. Findings of the tests are reported
