Abstract
Information security and issues related to its achievement in open systems architectures are discussed. Beginning with a discussion of the goals of information security and their relation to open systems, examples are provided of the threats to electric utility computer systems and the consequences associated with these threats. Basic countermeasures applicable to all computer systems are presented. Issues specific to open systems architectures are discussed
