Abstract :
A two-terabyte optical archival store (OAS) has been built and is currently in use with a number of VAX computers. It is intended to hold very large sets of experimental data for a minimum cost, with automatic operation and rapid random access to files. The system has been designed for easy use by scientists. The OAS can be used from a VAX cluster or via an extensive Ethernet and has shown the strong reliability needed for holding valuable data for long periods of time.<>
