Abstract
This study is concerned with fast determination of generation shedding in a power system in a transient emergency state. A simple procedure is developed to calculate the critical partial energy of individual machines and the associated partial energy margin. The partial energy function is then applied to the transient stability assessment of a power system subjected to a large disturbance. Following this assessment, an energy-based analytical sensitivity method is presented. The sensitivity of the partial energy margin at any instant to the change of generation levels analytically derived in a closed form. It offers a one-shot calculation for quantitative estimation of generation that must be shed to maintain system stability. The proposed sensitivity technique and procedure are illustrated for the Taipower system, with reasonably accurate results
