Abstract
The need for standards of personal accountability for professionals working in the field of software engineering is examined. The field is defined, and the technical expertise and entry-level requirements that it requires are identified. Ways to initiate the process of obtaining a broad professional consensus on the norms of the software engineering field are proposed.<>
