Abstract :
The way in which the Japanese use worldwide information gathering to outstrip their western competitors in the technology marketplace is described. The introduction of the 1M DRAM by Toshiba and of superior videotape by several Japanese companies are cited as examples of clever use of technological intelligence. Japanese skill at reverse engineering and their dominant position in consumer electronics are examined. The benefits of openness are discussed.<>
