Abstract :
The author looks at the British conversion to the metric system (or `metrification´ as some prefer), which has been in progress for a generation. He became involved with the conversion to the metric system from the senior management view within the engineering industry, but now looks back with a sense of failure despite the fact that engineering supported the metric system. He details how the position now is that only a few countries are not fully metric. This includes Britain and the United States
