Abstract
The theory of dispersion in monomode fibres is considered giving formulas for the pulse response of an optical monomode fibre system in terms of source spectral width and centre frequency and first- and second-order dispersion parameters for the fibre. Generally, source spectral width is much larger than signal bandwidth, in which case a simple linear response function may be derived. For such systems calculations of bandwidth and pulse response are given for some typical values of source and fibre parameters. The measurement of the monomode fibre parameters is also considered.
