Abstract :
For pt.I see ibid., p.362 (1989). The authors discuss the mechanical and thermal design and the manufacture of single-rotating and contrarotating self-excited homopolar generators. It is shown how the allowable size and rotational speed of the rotor are limited by the rotational stresses during operation. Values are given for the forces and stresses generated in the field coils during current pulsing, and a structure for accommodating them is proposed. The manufacture of the rotor and stator and the subsequent assembly of these components are described in some detail. The temperature rise in various parts of the system during current pulsing is calculated, and an assessment is made of the resulting differential expansion between the rotor and stator
