Abstract :
The neutrino experiment KARMEN, which uses a 56-t liquid scintillation detector, requires good timing and resolution. A description is given of a 3-in, 8-dynode photomultiplier, the XP3462, which was developed to meet this need. 2500 of these tubes were tested with respect to gain characteristics, energy resolution, single-photoelectron resolution, time resolution, linearity, and noise figure. The results are presented and discussed.
