Abstract :
Toraldo di Francia´s results on mode number through ring pupils are applied to graded-index fibres. The previously found numbers of trapped and leaky modes are confirmed, but a question is raised concerning whether an incoherent omni-directional source does excite all the fibre modes with equal power.
