  • Abstract
A multimodal method used to analyze the conversion mechanisms in semiconductor-waveguide TE/TM mode converters is presented. This method can deal with the asymmetric structures that actually occur in fabricated devices. A two-dimensional vectorial finite element method is used for the evaluation of the guided modes. A design for a buried waveguide TE/TM converter in InP/InGaAsP is proposed and simulated. The influence of the multimodal effects is discussed.<>
