Abstract
The historical background is briefly reviewed, and current research efforts are described. The effect of electromagnetic radiation on healing, of soft tissue cells, and on bacteria are discussed. It is concluded that considerable evidence exists for potentially using electrical stimulation to enhance healing of soft tissues, but that more detailed and longer-term basic and clinical studies are clearly indicated.
