Abstract
The paper addresses the importance to naval operations of ESM systems features, including signal detection sensitivity, frequency measurement, angular accuracy and the essential capability to recognise specific emitters when their signals are immersed in a dense background of pulses from other sources. The challenging problems facing the designers of future equipment capable of satisfying this expanding requirement at a price which can be afforded within contracting defence budgets is discussed.
