Abstract :
The write/read performance of the single-pole-type (SPT) head for perpendicular magnetic recording was investigated. The main pole consisted of sputtered amorphous Co-Zr-Nb films with thicknesses of Tm=0.3-1.2 μm. The track width was 300 μm. The same flexible CoCr/NiFe double-layer medium was used for measuring the write/read performance of each SPT head. The dependence of the recording sensitivity, the readback output voltage Vrp, the second peak output voltage, and the resolution D50 on the main pole thickness was measured and is discussed. It was found that Vrp increased by 30% when the saturation flux density of the main pole film was increased from 10000 G to 14000 G
