Abstract :
A linear electrogyration effect has been identified in ¿-quartz. The effect comprises an electric-field dependence of the optical activity, causing rotation of the polarisation direction of propagating light by application of a transverse electric field. The effect has potential usefulness in high-voltage measurement and in optical modulators.
