Abstract :
The maximum transmission length of data coded solitons at 5 Gbit/s has been investigated for a simple Er-doped fibre amplifier system without in-line soliton controls using short pulses generated by an InGaAsP electroabsorption modulator. The use of low fibre dispersion and large separation of solitons was effective in increasing the transmission distance up to 13100 km with less than 10-9 bit error rate. The obtained transmission capacity of 65 Tbit/s km is the largest reported for soliton transmission experiments without soliton control.
