Abstract :
A compact Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with high 27 dB modulation ratio was fabricated on the end facet of a singlemode optical fibre by F2-laser micromachining. The deep ultraviolet (157 nm) laser excised a shallow phase-shift channel across one-half of the fibre core to generate sinusoidal interference spectra controllable by the laser-etch depth.
