Abstract :
The contributions of manufacturing variations in optical-waveguide core diameter, numerical aperture and refractive-index profile exponent to loss in splices and connections are investigated by computer simulation. Expressions allowing predictions of loss from a knowledge of fibre population parameters are developed.
