Abstract :
The European Synchrotron Radiation Source, presently being designed, will use a 6-GeV electron/position storage ring to produce X-radiation from insertion devices and dipole bending magnets. A brief description is given of novel features of the storage ring dipoles, quadrupoles, and sextupoles. In order to provide a source of softer radiation, the dipoles have a low-field region at one end, generated by special pole inserts. The quadrupoles and sextupoles are designed to allow the extraction of radiation at variable positions through their outer regions. They both have open-sided designs. The sextupoles also generate vertical and horizontal correction dipole fields, which has lead to a design containing five back-leg coils as well as the six standard sextupole coils.
