Abstract :
After a brief review of magnetic separator requirements, the major systems delivered to date are described and some possible future developments are outlined. Both open-gradient and matrix separators are considered. The advantages to be gained by using superconducting magnets are then briefly outlined. It is noted that when the capital costs of generating stored magnetic energy are considered, at values in excess of 1 MJ, the superconducting magnet has a decided cost advantage over permanent and conventional magnets.
