Abstract :
The author describes the 4.4-m, warm bore diameter, thin superconducting solenoid, for the proposed Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The STAR solenoid will generate a very uniform central magnetic induction of 0.5 T within a space which is 4.0 m in diameter by 4.2 m long. The solenoid and its cryostat will be 0.7 radiation lengths thick over a length of 5.45 m, about the center of the magnet, making it the largest solenoid less than one radiation length to be built. A proposed design for the solenoid and cryostat, its flux return iron, its cryogenic system, and its power supply and quench protection system is described.<>
