Abstract :

We show that binary cyclic codes of length $n = 2^{m} - 1$ with generator $g(x)=m_{1}(x)m_{7}(x)$ have minimum distance $< 5$ unless $m = 5$ (and possibly $m = 11, 13, or 17)$ .
