Abstract :
At a discussion meeting, arranged by the IEE´s Management and Design Division, the introductory speaker (Dr. G.F. Turnbull) stressed that the board of a company must have a strategy as to the type of business it wanted to be in, which must stem from an analysis of customer needs. He distinguished between selling and marketing, and identified essential steps in establishing new products: for each there must be a `product champion¿, and a distinction must be made between thinkers and doers, as each has a contribution to make. Discussion groups then examined four aspects of the subject: organisation structure, getting the right product at the right time, a passive role or an active role for development, money.
