Runlength coding systems for black-and-white facsimile pictures: a comparison

Some systems with unformatted and formatted runlength codes are compared with respect to data compression, error resistivity and simplicity of implementation. The comparison with a system using make-up and terminating codewords (m.t.c.) shows clear differences between the systems, as well as their strong and weak points.
