Abstract :
The original background to the discovery of electromagnetic waves is described. It is shown that many of the extremely high-frequency techniques, which have been used in modern times, can be traced back to Heinrich Hertz himself. The influence which Hertz´s work had on the invention of the cavity magnetron by Randall and Boot is described in somewhat more detail than has hitherto been published.
