  • Abstract
Renewing the UK´s nuclear programme could make US-style blackouts less likely in the long term, but the industry would have to reinvent itself first. There are four key conditions for ensuring the industry´s future. First, a resolution of the nuclear waste problem: this doesn´t need science and technology in spades; public trust is the real issue. Secondly, an end to plutonium movements to counter public concerns over nuclear proliferation and terrorism post 9/11. Thirdly, a higher degree of passive safety (as perceived by the general population) and finally, plant designs that are compatible with the requirements of liberalised markets.
