Abstract :
The temporal evolution of the polarization state of optical pulses under the effect of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is analyzed. Pulse chirp and PMD cause characteristic rotation of the Stokes vector on the Poincare sphere. A dynamical equation describing the rotation is obtained for a Gaussian shaped pulse with linear chirp affected by first-order PMD. Differential group delay, pulsewidth, and first-order frequency chirp are calculated from the measured time-resolved Stokes vector using the dynamical equation.
