Photoelectric detector for daytime lightning

A wideband optical detector has been developed to determine the time characteristics of optical radiation from daytime lightning. A feature of the device is its ability to discriminate relatively low level long duration (500 ms) pulses due to lightning against a background illumination of up to 13,000 lx. This allows the characteristics of continuing currents to be investigated even in bright sunlit conditions.
